Enter the Throne Room

One of the most fascinating places I have ever visited was Versailles, the palace of Louis XVI. We were shown many different areas of the palace, and the one that we saw last was the lavish throne room itself. The first thing that I noticed upon entering the throne room was that it was so very elaborate that you automatically started speaking in a hushed whisper. This is the only personal experience I have ever had of a throne room.

When Louie XVI was at Versailles, as well as his predecessors, one did not just walk into the throne room to go before the king. You had to receive special permission, something that was very difficult to get. Contrast this with the open invitation believers have to approach the throne of grace, the stately seat of God’s power.

Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (NKJV)

In order to come before the throne of grace, one must first enter the throne room. For years and years I struggled with feeling unworthy to be before any throne, much less before the one where God almighty resides. While I was praying a few years ago about this very thing, the Lord in His mercy gave me a clear insight concerning this struggle. He said, “Walk through the cross into the throne room.”

Sunset over Water

I had never thought of that before. The way to the throne of God is through the cross. I was stunned and wanted to know more. The Lord impressed upon me that everything I will ever need in this life will be provided to me through the cross. The cross represents:

Love – one that cannot be explained in words

Sacrifice – that no human mind can understand; we must receive it by faith

Healing – from everything that besets us…disease, heartbreak, loneliness, bitterness, unforgiveness, self-loathing; the list is goes on

Forgiveness – that was the one I had the most trouble with, to accept the forgiveness that the cross represented, His blood that covered a multitude of sins

Jesus Himself gave us the key to come before His throne of grace, His gift of eternal life through the shedding of His blood. We are unworthy to come into His presence any other way. If you are struggling with coming before His throne of grace, look back at how you first came into His throne room – the cross – and ask yourself what it is that is stopping you from receiving the free gift of grace. Is it unforgiveness for yourself, for others, or some other sin that is keeping you from receiving His grace and mercy?

The Matthew Henry Commentary says it like this. “Our business at the throne of grace should be that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” I thought about this and realized it means not just the grace and mercy that we need in our lives from our Heavenly Father, but also the grace and mercy that we need to show others that need to come to Him as well.

I hope this post brings peace to your heart with whatever situation you may be struggling. Remember, I am here…and so is He! Until next time.
